Back House Bookcase

I based this piece on a type of New England 18 Century pine furniture. I describe it as Primitive Pine. Examples of this type are fairly crudely constructed. For example they are fastened with cut nails, but at the same time they have fine details showing that they were not hastily built. My Backhouse Bookcase is nailed together with traditional cut nails, and it's finer detailing is exhibited in the mitered face frame with a bead detail. Elements like this may seem out of place next to the square heads of the cut nails but it really works well I think. It is finished with milkpaint and shellac. The nails, details, and milkpaint are the ingredients for this success. Leave one out and it doesn't really work. An added bonus is that it is a comparatively economical piece. The name comes from the New England architectural trait of "big house, little house, backhouse, barn".
